What is an LEI code
An LEI is a 20-character international identifier that says exactly which legal entity stands behind a transaction. Since 2018 every bank and broker asks for it before a company can trade in securities.
The first four characters say which LOU issued the code. Codes issued through RapidLEI begin with 5299.
The middle part belongs to your company alone. It never changes, not even if the company is renamed or the code is transferred to another issuer.
The last two characters are a check number. They let any system spot immediately if the code has been copied down incorrectly.

The global LEI system (GLEIS) is the first global database providing unique identification information of legal entities participating in financial transactions all across the globe. The database forms an index of legal entities which is publicly accessible and completely free of charge to use. Each entity in the database is assigned its own, unique 20 digit code by which it is identified in many business activities and transaction reporting systems.
The LEI is a G20 endorsed, globally verifiable unique identity code. The LEI code contains a record with information about a company such as its identity and group structure. The LEI Legal Entity Identifier is a standard that has been adopted to increase transparency of transactions between organisations that do business and cross regional jurisdictions. Many believe the last recession in 2008 came about and was worsened by a lack of regulation. The LEI is a new ISO standardised code which brings transparency to participants in the global financial market place.
Entities involved in financial transactions or operating within the global financial economy often require an LEI code. This includes compliance with regulations such as MiFID II, EMIR, SFTR, and CSDR.

You can switch to a new LEI service provider whenever you wish – the Global LEI System supports healthy competition between issuers and registrars for the benefit of legal entities. The transfer of an LEI is costless and can be completed within seven days.
LEI codes are issued by Local Operating Units (LOUs). LOUs often work in partnership with Registration Agents who do not issue LEI codes directly but provide valuable assistance to legal entities in the registration, renewal, and transfer process of LEI codes by undertaking specific tasks. LEI Partner is a Registration Agent of GLEIF accredited LOU / LEI Issuer Ubisecure Oy (RapidLEI).
LEI Partner will usually assign your Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) number within 24 hours. Validating parental (Level 2) and fund relationship data can take up to 48 hours.
